3 Rod Rule per Angler
« on: June 06, 2011, 08:28:15 am »
Looks like they passed the Bill  :o
http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S2462-2011
It said that it would be in effect imidately but I am unsure if the local law enforcement all know this yet. I was going to print a copy of the bill and keep it with me when I go fishing. Thanks Ken for this thread topic

You should be able to have as (lol) many poles as you want.  I have at least 15 different poles.

I believe if you read the fishing regs, (both salt and fresh) it reads an angler may only use 1 pole per person. I never see them enforce it though

I see know sense in this law myself. There are regulations on how many fish you are allowed to keep and all this will do is maybe let you catch them faster. If people use this on the shores of the hudson during striper fishing it will just take up more room which means many folks won't be able to fish in certain areas where the room is already to small.I can just see someone fishing alone trying to man 3 rods in a 12' rowboat. It may even have an impact on places like pepacton where the rules were changes to allow only 1 fish over 21 and 1 under per day. This will increase the odds that more people will catch there limit every time they go.Just my opinion but I am not in favor of this law at all.

LOL  ;D Yeah you and a lot of others. I am guilty as well!
I am unsure how drastic it will change the game but I am sure it will get anglers more tired quicker. or more tangled lines. I can see dropping 2lines below the boat with live bait and casting a third line with a lure

The new law amends Environmental Conservation law as it pertains to 1 person who is fishing recreationally.  To my understanding, that covers both fresh and salt as written.

Despite what does or does not get enforced at a given time, you can use only (now) 3 rods per angler.

I can see the merits for this in baitfishing where you are specifically trying to catch fish for food such as crappies, perch, walleye, etc. and want to limit out.  You can cover more depth ranges and fish different baits to see what is working better at that time.  Same thing for trolling anglers looking for suspended fish.

I guess this will also amend the ice fishing rules to allow for another jig pole in addition to tip ups and other traps.

For those tossing lures for bass and other predominently catch and release fishing, it has little impact.

I was on Kensico today (caught browns and lakers... no monsters) and was checked by DEP cops who knew nothing about this change in the law. Did I expect otherwise? LOL

seems like DEP checking on Kensico happens often. I have never seen DEP on CFalls in my life.  I have only been checked 1 time in my life in this area and that was on Muscoot not long after 9/11.
