ashokan

Well just got home and managed 2 about 19 in,and lost 1 i think was a little bigger.I trolled all the way to the narrows and back to the white mark on the wall and really didn't mark a whole lot of fish. Most of what I was seeing was 60 to 75 ft deep. All 3 fish were on shiners. Also after 1:30 I had the whole reservoir to myself. There was 2 boats going out at 6pm as I was leaving. There is alot of junk floating and some are HUGE logs.may try again tomorrow but will see.Good luck all

Do you mind posting how deep you caught the fish? I'm planning on fishing the lower basin down by the West Hurley dike on Sun. Good luck if you go back out up there!

Thanks

Chris

The ashokan has really cleaned up alot and the bite is on.I have been fishing the lower basin the last few days and everyone is catching trout. thats the bait fishermen and the trollers both. The good thing about ashokan is you can use shiners and still catch real nice browns and rainbows. And they are MUCH cheaper then sawbellies and easier to keep alive. ;D I got 2 yesterday and they were about 3.5 and 4 lbs.

Fished the Ashokan this morn from 5-9am. Caught 4 browns an had a few others get off at the boat. Also caught several SM Bass that I would have preferred to avoid but they seem to be mixed in at the same elevation as the trout. The trout were all between 2.5 an 4lbs. All fish were caught on live sawbellies 20-28ft down in 50-55ft of water.

striperman..you spent a lot of time trolling! can i ask you how to you offer bait while trolling? how much weight? even if you let out your line at 20 ft , let us say, when you troll, line is at an angle and 20 ft is really 12 ft or so, unless you are using a down rigger? or a cable..
just curious. I rarely troll. But when weather gets hot, and water is warm, I would like to.

Fished the Ashokan this evening from 3:30-8:30pm. Caught 12 trout (11 browns & 1 rainbow) plus numerous smallmouth bass that I was trying to avoid but were mixed in the thermocline with the trout. All the trout were 2-6lbs except for the rainbow which was about 1 1/2lbs. All fish were caught on live sawbellies.

Sounds like you had a real good day Chris.Congrats ;D I fished myself with a friend from another forum and we didn't do near as good.I did catch my 1st ever yellow perch from the reservoir tho.It was probably 13 to 14 inch and thought I had a big trout on. ::) I kept a 21 inch brown for supper and that was all.I did have the same problem with the smallies while trolling tho.

Awesome job Chris!  That is some outing you had!  How is the Laker fishing up there?  Always wanted to try it.  I caught one of my first lakers back in April of 2005 in West Branch Reservoir that according to my taxidermist, in all likelihood came down the pipeline from Ashokan becasue all of his fins were intact.  Apparently the stocked lakers in WB have a pectoral fin clipped as do many of the lakers I catch in Gleneida.  In either case, it was a 12 lb specimen that I had mounted as it was the biggest laker I had caught at that time!

Continued Good Luck and Success!

Mike

striperman13,
Good catch. Since you kept the Brown trout for the table you may want to also try a yellow perch sometime. For the first time, I recently kept two and had a very tasty meal with them.

Tom,I have heard that but I gave it to my friend who I was fishing with.If I had thought there was a chance of catching another 1 or 2 I might have kept him myself. ;) I am hoping to have the boat I have here at the house will be ready to put in the reservoir in the next 6 to 7 dayss and then I will have 1 on the upper basin also.
