Line for Trout
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:30:10 pm »
OK. So I have been using Berkley Vanish Transition for over two years without any issue. This line, especially the 6lb test, has gotten bad reviews across the board. I have used the 6, 8, 12, and 17lb on different setups without snapping the line once, until recmently! Caught fish up to 7.5 lbs on it. So far this year, we lost 3 fish. One was in the trolling motor, so I give it a pass. Lost the other two on straight fight! No broken knots.

I have now switched to P-Line 8lb CX clear Copolymer. What do you use for bait and trolling lures? In my experince, you need an invisible line! If I lose one more 6+lb fish, i may go down with the ship!!!
Take a kid fishing. If there are no kids around or they don't wanna go, take me!

Strictly addressing my spinning gear, since about 1980 I used Ande 6 lb test mono exclusively, after trying many different brands. In the late 90s I started using Stren magna-thin. Then I
tried a few flurocarbon lines and found that they were too stiff for my spinning
gear.  I stopped using 6lb test predominantly as I found I had lost a number of large
fish, although I do keep a light setup with 6lb test for tossing 1/4 oz or less lures.
I have now been using P-Line CX Copolymer in 8lb test basically exclusively for several
years and I always recommend it to others. For flatline trolling and bait fishing on baitcasting reels
I only use Seaguar InvizX.

I recently started using Maxima Ultragreen 8lb test and I have been very pleased with it. I got snagged a few times and really pulled on the line hard to free my lure, 99% of the time I get my lure back without the line breaking....its very strong line and I have caught a lot of trout on it also.
I have used Trilene 8lb line in the past and I believe the Maxima 8lb test is way stronger than the Trilene.

I've had an overall good experience with Yo-Zuri Flurocarbon/Nylon Hybrid over the last couple of years. It's a great line but acquires some memory after a while, and is a little more visible than 100% flurocarbon.

I too have splurged on an Epixor reel and have been looking at the P-Line CX.

Ken, do you get many break-offs with the P-Line? I have yet to lose a fish, and very few lures, with the Yo-Zuri.

I will say that the P-Line is cheaper if I buy the 1000 yard spool.

Mike,
I had P-Line CX 8 lb test break once when I used it for a leader for my leadcore as I was out of fluro. A big laker took a run at the last minute under the boat bending the rod over the side, the drag couldn't catch up. But I consider
that to be MY error. I have never had P-Line CX break on me as a main line, which I use naturally without a leader,
in many years. I did try the P-Line CXX but I found the diameter a bit big. The same with the Yozuri Hybrid whjich I found to be an excellent line, but again just a bit too thick for my casting preference.

Ken, I checked out the P Line CX and it gets great reviews.
I mostly shore fish for trout at Kensico and do some ultra light spinning at the local trout streams.
Which color would you recommend for either of these conditions?
I have had the problem of not been able to see where my line is especially on the trout streams but was wondering if the florescent green might spook trout in those conditions...even with a fluorocarbon leader?
Although when I fished the Salmon River my guide did use a brightly colored yellow mono line that was very easy to see.
Which of the P Line CX colors do you think would be the best for the smaller trout streams here in Westchester?
I mostly throw small spoons, spinners & Rapalas but sometimes use a bobber with a fly or artificial worm/egg/minnow.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
I use the Moss Green and Flourescent Clear the most. But I have also used
the flourecent lime-green and have caught enough fish with it to say that the color
poses no problem. I'm also aware that the Salmon River guys have been using he high visibility colors without any problems. The lime green is considerably more visible to the angler, so I'd recommend it.
The only drawback being that sometimes it's not as easy to find i stores as the other colors.

I like Seguar Invizyx in 4 lb for my stream spinning rods and 8 lb for early spring shore casting. I've only caught small (3 lb) browns but some decent lakers with the 8 and it has held up well. For the 10 noodle rod I just bought I prepared 2 spools to use for browns, one in 6 lb Invizyx and the other in 8 lb Abrazix. Plan on starting Tuesday and all of June for the browns so will wait and see how it holds up (provided I catch something!). For my DR and longline trolling I rely on good old Berkley Trilene XT in clear 10 lb.
