8lb Bass in Mahopac
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:39:09 pm »
As a resident of Mahopac, we can get a free paper called the "Mahopac News." Anyway, there is a picture of some high school kid who recently caught an 8lb LM Bass out of Lake Casse (notoriously known for only small 1-2lb bass). It was 24" and he released it obviously.  Anyone else see this pic? I'm curious if others think it is really 8lbs or more like 5-6lbs. In the article the kid says how he has fished there for many many years and only catches 1-2lbers until he caught this huge female.

I haven't seen the pic but 24" LMB @8 LBs...I've caught and released 26-28"  LMB and assumed max. 7#...I didn't have scale, only tape...now I'm wondering how much those animals weighed  ???

That Kid must have had the fight of his life. I dont think 8lbs maybe 5 or 6 but definitely that kids biggest fish out that pond. It probably felt like 30lbs to the kid! Good for Him ;)
Lets go Yankee's

I think that from that angle that "could" be an 8lber.
What I'm saying is that I don't see anything in the picture that
would raise red flags immediately about the claimed weight.
Maybe he was using the same high precision MIC give-or-take-a-pound
digital scale that I use. LOL

I dont think he used a scale at all. It says he estimated the weight at 8lbs. Also it says 2 foot long Bass, but nowhere does it say he even measured its length.  It could be 24" and 8lbs or maybe 20" and 4.5lbs....who knows?

Not enough to go on to make a definitive call.  He's got the classic "hold it out for the camera pose" going on, but the fish is turned, so no real girth to gauge.  Plus we don't know his size, rod length, etc. that would give any perspective to it.

Bottom line is he said he caught an 8lb bass...to him it'll always be an 8lber and probably larger by the time he tells his grand kids about it.  Kudos to the young angler for being outdoors instead of playing world of warcraft or something.

Since this kid didn't have the proper tools to take accurate metrics, I'm going to assume he won't be breaking any catch and release records.... ahem ::)

There is no way to tell without a scale. I caught a 7-12 last year that was only 22 inches long. He looks like he's holding it out toward the camera, so while a big fish there is no way to guesstimate from the photo either. Too bad. But then, maybe he'll have a better memory of catching it if he thinks it's an 8.

Welcome Chris P.

I agree that we'll all have to guess. From that angle you can't see if it's a skinny fish or does it have a big fat belly.

Wish I caught it,
Vinny
