I'm going to hit the Salmon River Friday and Saturday. Hopefully this trip goes better than the last one.

Jimmy, what's running in the Salmon River now?    Is it Browns in the Winter/Fall, and Steelies/Salmon in the Spring?       Do you fly fish, or are you using conventional?

Fly fishing.  Steelhead..... there are brown there also that have held over from the fall but not in great numbers. The salmon start their run from mid September through mid November peaking around mid October. I don't fish for them though.

Awesome.    In a given season, I flyfish more than I do conventional, although I do both.     I do the typical local East Branch, West Branch stuff, and very rarely, go up with a friend to the Delaware (and the "big" East Branch, West Branch).

One of these days I am going to do the Salmon River thing.    I had heard it is awesome, but that often you really have to fish shoulder-to-shoulder with guys.     But the big fish would be the draw for me.    I lived in Colorado for awhile, and got spoiled on regular, big trout out of streams.

I fly fish the reservoirs on occasion, but have really done well on bass, only.    Never have taken a really big brown.

Good luck, and definitely post if you get a steelie.

Thanks Bluefish....the crowds are gone up there around the second week of November. Thats when I start going up. If you go do so during the week, if you can. You gotta hook into a steelhead my man....theres nothing like it  :o. Your always looking for that fix once you catch one. The shoulder to shoulder thing is salmon season...don't let that put you off.

I've never fly fished for bass but I bet its a blast.

What are the species of fish in the local streams? Or is it only trout?

Lionpshark   -   local streams are mostly browns and rainbows, but of course there are the occasional panfish, carp, etc.    Even some walleye in East Branch (up from Diverting Res)..

Jimmy  -   I assume you have a boat on one of the reservoirs.    Just get any big streamer pattern (like a sawbelly) and fish the shores the way you would cast to bass.    It is wild.    Smallies on a fly rod are awesome.   So are largemouth.
I have never gotten any big browns on a flyrod on the reservoirs.   Frankly, not even a hit by a big one (although i haven't given it enough tries, I guess).    I did have a "scare" on Croton Falls about 4 or so years ago.    I was out early, with nothing (no bait, no gear, no depth finder) other than my fly rod, net and oars.    I was casting away near the Stoneleigh Causeway, and stripping the fly back.    A huge  -  huge  - brown swam up following the fly for a good 15 feet.    I panicked, and did exactly what you are not supposed to do.....I stopped stripping the fly in.    He lost interest and bolted.   Won't make that mistake again.

I caught only trout, browns and rainbows, perhaps because I target them. bluefish is right there are panfish, like yellow perch, also suckers, small mouths and other species. Some are seasonal, like shad in Croton Dam outlet.

I fished in the streams of Rensselaer County about 15 years ago and I remember them only producing small trout nothing over 14 inches or so give or take an inch. But it was great fun April 1st everyone lined up and down the streams and not I but a lot of people would follow the fish stocking trucks
Lets go Yankee's
