Best trout res? Putnam/Upper Wes.
« on: March 25, 2011, 04:34:58 pm »
Hello all,

In the next few months, we look to move north to either upper Putnam or lower Dutchess counties along the Rte 84 Corridor, and I'm curious what would be a good (local) place to look to put a boat on. I'd prefer a good trout lake but I'm an avid bass fan as well. I love Kensico but I will not be making as many trips there unless I'm in the area.

What would be the best overall target? Anything north of Yorktown would be good...West Branch, Middle Branch, East Branch, New Croton, etc. Bog Brook is more bass-orientated to my understanding....

On another non-res note, I heard Gleneida in Carmel is a decent trout lake.

If boat spots are not available I'll try connecting with someone here.

Thanks!

West Branch has LL Salmon also. Gleneida and Gilead are usually closed to new boats.

Worthy considerations fellas, thanks. I know they are present but has anyone seen a LL Salmon pulled out of West Branch? It was mentioned here on the forum some time ago....

thats odd, i never heard of salmon being in the reservoirs until today.... why do they need to be stocked around here? i just find it odd to stock salmon in a lake.

If you want to bass fish and also have an opportunity to catch nice trout, Croton Falls is your best bet. But,, for lakers, you may want to venture to West Branch as mentioned earlier. It has LL Salmon, Browns, and lakers. Muscoot is a sleeper with good bass as well as browns and rainbows.

Unless you buy a boat already on Gleneida, you will never get a spot. Closed indefinitely to new boats. Gilead is a good one for all trout and bass too.

Not a bad mixed bag, I must say.

Are there usually boat spots available in good trout water in Croton Falls or West Branch?

Yes, Both have good areas open. Not the easiest, but still good access.

Yonkers, I agree with Trout Stalker.    I fished Kensico for years (which is great), but about 10 years ago started fishing Croton Falls as well, specifically for the big browns.    I wasn't disappointed.     There is also great bass and panfish fishing, but the browns are the ticket.

If I were to put a boat on a reservoir, with the intention of fishing for brown trout, I would go with C Falls.    (Since, of course, Gleneida is closed).

NOOOOO, there are no fish in Croton Falls ! haha j/k....I put a boat on C-Falls last September (my first res. boat). I have caught nice smallies and largemouth, also caught yellow perch and white perch, and 1 tiny catfish. No Browns yet, but hopefully this spring! I have a good spot, the boat was on the spot already when I bought it from Jack Stewart.  Only downfall to Croton Falls is the drag to the water when the water is down. It was down all last year and suppose to be down the next 2-3 years.

Biz-R-Oworld, put in the time in April/May/early June, and you will get browns, absolutely guaranteed.   I assume you are in the "main" lake;  that is, the lake part with the dam on it (not that "side" lake to the east of Stoneleigh causeway).    If  not, get Stewart to move you to the main part, asap.   I am not giving away too much in saying that if you fish sawbellies, troll the shorelines, and basically stay in the 40 foot depth range, you will hit them.   No way you can miss.     Don't waste your time in the middle of the lake (some do), and fish the points and dropoffs.

One last thing   -   CF is up all the way now, higher than it's been in a long, long time.   You shouldn't have a long drag to the lake this year.

I like that the fact that decent areas may be still open there Bluefish. I called the DEP office this morning but they are only open Tues, Wed, and Fri....that new? As a former NY city employee, cutting costs and corners are nothing new with them.
