Went out about 7am with Sam and his buddy Marc to Bog Brook just over the county line in Putnam. Launched into our little cove area after bringing the boat over about 20 feet of rocky shoreline. It seems a lot of the reservoirs are very low this season. The water temperature was around 74 degrees and the air temps were pleasant with not much wind until about 9am or so.
Bog Brook is known for it's smallie population and I got to see that pretty quickly. We still had the morning fog and the water was calm. We tried some topwater baits around some weedy areas but nothing was hitting them. As we drifted into deeper water (about 20 feet) I grabbed a t-rigged "Rockraw" one of my new favorite plastic baits. It's a realistic crawfish bait I get from Hookerz Tackle.
Something took my rockraw and tried to run with it. I set the hook and felt a nice little fight in the fish. I was also using 30lb PowerPro braid so I felt good about keeping it hooked. After a couple of nice jumps, I lipped a nice 3lb 6ounce smallie for the first fish of the day.
The boys had a few hits right away also and brought in a couple of 1+lb smallies. As we went along the shoreline I got another smallie on my t-rigged rockraw that was just over 2lbs. Moments later Marc snagged a nice 2lb 12ounce largemouth on a small blue senko. The 2.5 inch blue senko is his "Confidence Bait" and it never disappoints him.
We caught a few more small fish and had a great day. Sam got to nap on the way back in as Marc and I kept looking and trying for another keeper but by 11am they seemed to have left our area.
