Which Reservoir??
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:06:41 am »
Hey Everybody:
I recently joined the forums and have enjoyed the all of the discussions.  More importantly though, I have learned a great deal about fishing the croton reservoir system, among others.  Over the last couple of years, I have been fly fishing the Croton watershed, focusing more on the West Branch at Croton Falls and the Amawalk off Wood Street.  Just this past Christmas, my good friend and I got boat as a gift from our wives.  Hopefully I can get it on the lake as soon as I can; I guess I have to call the DEC on MArch 15 to schedule a cleaning.. Anyway, I was planning on Titicus, however I am not 100% sure.  Jack Stewart told me that places like East and West Branch, Croton Falls and Bog Brook are going to be low for the next couple years..  Titicus, Amawalk, Muscoot, or New Croton were some suggestions.  Based on both our locations, we omitted New Croton from our list.  So between Titicus, Amawalk, or Muscoot; what would be the best for bass, trout, catfish, and/or panfish?  Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Muscoot is a nice reservoir since it has diverse areas to fish. There aren't any trout that I know of but there are plenty of other species. I know of largemouth bass up to 8lbs coming out of Muscoot. Some reservoirs are seasonal, where the action is better for a couple of months. Muscoot tends to have something to go for throughout the season.

Amawalk seems to be one of those seasonal reservoirs that can be great or be really slow. I don't have a boat on Titicus but there are trout and bass and other species in there.

Have fun,
VinnyH

If trout is on your target list, I'd definitely go with Titicus.
Amawalk has some too, and even Muscoot does to a very small'extent but neither of
them are known as "trout waters".
You can find LB and SMB in all of them as well as panfish.

Not for nothing but if you look at the JS Derby, records (LAST 20 YEARS) show alot more Browns and Bows coming out of Muscoot on a fluke shot??? Remember it has a bunch of inlets that now from all rain dumped out all the fish...The question is ...Does Muscoot provide a habitat for these fish to thrive...I say yes..

Good question. You might be right. The JS book does show at least 2 big browns
caught out of Muscoot. I used to have a 14ft on Muscoot Area 1 back in 1985.
Some guy caught a 4 lb Brown under that bridge and it was a big deal then
cause the DEC weren't even stocking Muscoot with trout then. I was told then that
Muscoot didn't have the depth to support trout during the summer months. But
of course if it has tributaries that might do it.  I suppose that since they now are
stocking trout in muscoot and it been this many years the whole situation may have
changed. But for alot of the old timers, Muscoot still has the image of a very good bass
reservoir.

Thanx for all the advice.  I'm thinkin' Titicus,  that was the original choice and from what I gather that seems to be a good one.  While Titicus is thawing, I have been shore fishing on Croton Falls, Muscoot and Cross River.  I have been using shallow suspending crankbaits and small softbaits texas rigged.  Any other suggestions? I'm new to the reservoir fishing scene, so I don't know a ton about all the details.  I am more familiar with fly fishing...however now that we have the boat, the fly-rod may sit in the closet a little longer this year..Any advice would be great...Thanks again for all the help.

If you are looking for action Titcus is the best. I have been fishing there for 40 plus years from shore and a boat and still have a boat there.

Welcome to the forums.

Even though I live near Kensico, I love fishing Bog Brook. It was down a couple of years ago for the dam work. I hope they aren't redoing what they were supposed to do the first time.

Best to All,
Vinny
