Back to My Roots. . .
« on: September 03, 2007, 08:50:58 pm »
As my son and i have yet to catch our first bass on Kensico, we were fortunate to have a long vacation at Ponte Vedra Beach near my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.

My dad's old Daiwa reel still worked perfectly after 30 years! We bought some other gear at Wal Mart, got some dead shrimp from the bait shop and hit the surf.

The first day, we lit it up for about 8 fish--six whiting and two catfish. One of the catfish returned my catch-and-release favor by spiking me in the foot after i had already let him back in the water. He actually came back to get me!

The second day, we caught about six more. Josh caught a big bull catfish--which was the biggest fight he's ever had (he's only six).

Another morning out on the nearby pier was neither as productive, fun or cool as fishing in the surf.

A few days later we caugh several small whiting, one bull whiting and a bluefish, which we brought to my grandmother's caregiver--making her quite happy!

Now--if we can only somehow adapt our surf fishing skills to reservoir fishing!!!

(I also did a lot of research into fish handling and circle hooks, which i look forward to discussing in an appropriate forum. . .)

Sounds like a fun time to be with each other out there catching fish. A nice variety of species from your trip.

I haven't caught a catfish in about 40 years but I still remember those whiskers/barbs. Maybe he was insulted that you didn't think he was big enough to keep.  ;D

Best Always,
Vinny
