Planning to go to the Lake George region with friends for the holidays. Anybody has experience in winter fishing there?

Go to the forums of FISH307 to post that question. I've been meaning to put my canoe up there before it ices up but have never gotten around to it. This is always a busy time for me and then we get ice, so I haven't tried. Soon I'll be cutting holes around here.

Thanks, this was really helpful. I got tons of useful tips on fishing Lake George in winter at FISH307. They say, real fun starts in late January-early February when the lake freezes up. I`m planning to check if it`s safe to fish small bays of LG end of December-early January. Ice-fishing is already going on up there. It`s also worth checking some ponds in the area.

You might get on some of the bays of LG later this month but certainly many other lakes up there are safe already. There's ice down here already. I'm going as soon as the wind dies down.

That's cool. I don't know much about ice-fishing around NY. Did some arctic char fishing long time ago.

For the best results, fish at night. They will tend to move towards the shallower waters near or along the banks to feed on the smaller fish. Like some others said, chicken livers, turkey livers, hot dogs, stink bait, cut shad or herring, large minnows, Nightcrawlers, red river worms, catalpa worms, leeches, grasshoppers, crawfish(AKA crawdads)etc.

Cool! I have no such such experience. I have a privilege of staying at a house which sits on a lakeshore, so I can go anytime, if conditions allow ;D

Since Lakers are a type of Char, I wonder if that exotic type of bait mentioned would work for winter Laker fishing. Also I wonder of the technique of going near the shore at night would also work. With Kensico open for winter fishing for the first time, Laker fishermen need to experiment with new ways to go after Lakers when the surface temps are in the mid 30s.

As far as I remember, we fished them chars deep. They congregated in the deepest, and the warmest at winter, spots. So colorful on snow, I admired them. The setup was quite unusual - I haven`t seen anybody fishing like this at local reservoirs. Light jig at the end of line (this takes the rig down to the bottom), then like 4-5  droppers with so called marmish or weighted flies imitating some bugs. The whole setup looked like a garland. Sometimes we used grubs on hooks, but mostly just used those waving motions to mobe the rig up and down at different stroke and amplitude. Since droppers were in 2 feet distance from each other one could effectively cover a significant range of depths. We also took some trout on this rig occasionally.

That's a really Beautiful fish.
Like most Chars and trout I'm guessing that red is
seasonal or male before/during spawn?

Yes, you're right. Red, orange or golden are spawners' colors. More intense in males. But even when colors are pale they are still beatiful...and very strong.
